Data Science in Action: Convolutional Neural Networks for Self-Driving Cars
A week-long summer introduction to programming and machine learning for high school students!

Neural networks are a set of algorithms, modeled loosely after the human brain, that are designed to recognize patterns. The objective of the course is to introduce students to machine learning and programming through a weeklong project in which students will program a neural network to recognize images and make a self-driving toy car.

The course consists of a theoretical and a programming component. Students will be introduced to a different machine learning concept and algorithm. In parallel they will be introduced to Python programming language which will allow them to program the concepts they have studied.

Students will participate in exercises using different methods for classifying images of hand-written numerical digits, and will be shown tools to continue learning and programming on their own. Finally, they will take pictures of physical objects and train their own neural network to recognize these objects. Once they achieve good performance, they will install their program into a toy car equipped with a camera which will self drive using their programmed neural network.

Eligibility Requirements:
high school student (rising freshman – rising senior)
we will give preference to underrepresented minority & low-income backgrounds
Interest in applying to college with a focus in STEM
Basic algebra
Completed application form
