Inaugural BLS Summer Science Research Camp

Summer Science Research Camp Advances (SSRC) Experiential Learning

Fourteen BLS students braved the heat and humidity, during the weeks of July 8 and 15, performing their own independent research at this first-of-its-kind Summer Science Research Camp. With the mentorship and support of Ms. Bateman and Mr. Balicki, students came in for these two weeks to develop and carry out their science fair projects. Of the 14 students, 13 will compete in the high school science fair and one will compete in the middle school fair, both in 2020.

Students’ projects examine a wide variety of subjects; here's just a sample:

• Quantifying and categorizing the microplastic content in sea salts from different countries
• Comparing the VOC levels in different Boston MBTA stations
• Testing the variability of circadian rhythms in Madagascar hissing cockroaches
• Engineering an optimal design for a magnetic powered train prototype

As the result of two weeks of hard work, students have a leg up on their science fair projects. They will continue to develop their projects throughout the school year in advance of the Boston Citywide Science fair in February. This program was made possible through BLSA funding.

Additional Support for the 2020 Science Fair

If any student in Classes V-I would like to start a science fair project now for entry in to the City Wide Science Fair on February 29, 2020, please reach out to Mr. Balicki and Ms. Bateman.

SSRC in Summer of 2020

Students interested in participating in the program should express interest to Mr. Balicki and Ms. Bateman as soon as possible as space is limited.
