Mr. Pitts: 2020 Recipient of Jazz Educator of the Year Award

Our own Mr. Paul Pitts '73, BLS Director of Visual and Performing Arts, has been selected as the 2020 recipient of the prestigious John LaPorta Jazz Educator of the Year Award!

The honor is presented by Berklee College of Music in collaboration with the Jazz Education Network (JEN). The LaPorta Award recognizes Mr. Pitts as “an outstanding jazz educator who represents the highest standards of teaching and whose results in the classroom have brought distinction to an institution and to students.”

The award cites his work at BLS as “impressive and far reaching” and notes that he has influenced the artistic lives of thousands of students. And beyond the walls of BLS, he has had an influence on fellow music teachers across New England, especially as a leader in the Massachusetts Music Educators Association (MMEA), helping to shape jazz education for many.

The John LaPorta Award is named after a legendary jazz educator who served as a distinguished professor at Berklee for more than three decades. The award will be presented to Mr. Pitts at the annual JEN Conference in New Orleans in January.

Congratulations, Mr. Pitts!
