This course is designed to highlight the major events, values, and people that have shaped the United States of America from the arrival of the first Americans, during pre-historic times, to the end of Reconstruction, in 1877. It will provide students with a historical background in an effort to help them interpret, understand, and address current issues faced by our society. We will consider the experiences of the: enslaved, free, poor and rich; Native American, European, African and Asian; men and women –their interaction with one another and their roles in determining the course of American development.
