African American Studies will focus on the historic and cultural basis of the African American experience.  The course explores the history of African Americans from African origins to the present; societies in West and West Central Africa, slavery and freedom in colonial and early American history, the Civil War and Reconstruction, and 20th century struggles for civil rights. The course will examine major social, political and economic forces that have helped to shape African American history and the resulting impact of African Americans on American society. In addition to the required text, works of literature, film and art will be used to support the curriculum.
