Spanish 1

This class in an introduction to Spanish language and culture for students with little or no prior knowledge of Spanish. In alignment with the Massachusetts World Language Frameworks and the city of Boston World Language Curriculum Framework, the Spanish 1 course is designed to allow students to complete all Stage 1 activities in the six areas of the city curriculum: reading, writing, speaking, listening, culture and connecting. Students are expected to perform with confidence in tasks of increasing difficulty so that they can meet the power standards listed below for Level 1 and develop answers to the Essential Questions below based on the national standards for learning a foreign language (culture, connections, comparisons, communities and communication). Teachers are expected to conduct the class 90% of the time in the target language, using English when necessary for clarification.



Spanish 2

Spanish 2 is a continuation of the skills introduced in Spanish 1.

In alignment with the Massachusetts World Language Frameworks and the city of Boston World Language Curriculum Framework, the Spanish 2 course is designed to allow students to complete all Stage 2 activities in the six areas of the city curriculum: reading, writing, speaking, listening, culture and connecting.

Spanish 3 is a continuation of and further immersion in the skills introduced in Spanish 1 and Spanish 2

Spanish 4

Spanish 4 is a continuation of and further immersion in the skills introduced in Spanish 1, 2 and 3. Students will focus on reading and analyzing authentic literature and themes from Spain and Latin America.

In alignment with the Massachusetts World Language Frameworks and the city of Boston World Language Curriculum Framework, the Spanish 4 course is designed to allow students to complete all Stage 3 activities in the six areas of the city curriculum: reading, writing, speaking, listening, culture and connecting.

Students are expected to perform with confidence in tasks of increasing difficulty so that they can meet the power standards listed below for Level 4 and develop answers to the Essential Questions below based on the national standards for learning a foreign language (culture, connections, comparisons, communities and communication). Teachers are expected to conduct the class 90% of the time in the target language, using English when necessary for clarification.



AP Spanish Language

In alignment with the Massachusetts World Language frameworks, the city of Boston World Language Curriculum Framework and the guidelines set forth by the Educational Testing Services regarding Advanced Placement language courses, the A.P. course is designed to allow students to operate at stage 4 of the activities listed in the six areas of the city curriculum: culture, connecting, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Tasks are divided into the following four categories: Interpersonal Speaking, Interpersonal Writing, Presentational Writing and Presentational Speaking. The course is taught at the level of a fifth or sixth semester college class. Students are expected to take the Advanced Placement exam offered in May .

The AP Spanish Language course is arranged by 6 thematic units with overarching questions using short stories, articles and poetry combined with a thorough review of grammar topics and vocabulary. Themes include Global Challenges, Personal and Public Identities, Science and Technology, Families and Communities, Contemporary Life, Beauty and Aesthetics. Students are expected to communicate entirely in Spanish and the class is conducted exclusively in Spanish (except for when grammar needs to be explained).




AP Spanish Literature

In alignment with the Massachusetts World Language frameworks, the city of Boston World Language Curriculum Framework and the guidelines set forth by the Educational Testing Services regarding Advanced Placement language courses, the A.P. course is designed to allow students to operate at stage 4 of the activities listed in the six areas of the city curriculum: culture, connecting, listening, speaking, reading and writing.

The AP Spanish Literature and Culture course is designed to introduce students to the formal study of a representative body of literature, written in Spanish, from Spain, Latin America, and the United States. The body of literature encompasses various forms of literature, including poetry, prose, and drama.

Students will be encouraged to reflect on the many voices and cultures and cultures represented. Media will be used to present audio and audiovisual resources, as well as artistic representations. The literature will be presented in the context of six thematic units: (1) Societies in contact, (2) Dualities of Being, (3) the Construct of Gender, (4) Interpersonal Relationships, (5) Literary Creation, and (6) Time and Space. Students are expected to communicate entirely in Spanish and the class is conducted exclusively in Spanish.
