  Who is BLS ...?

Meet Dr. Carroll

Dr. William Carroll has been a faculty member since 1998, teaching German and Latin to students at all levels. A favorite of many, Dr. Carroll was honored with the Gerald Gitner '62 Award for Outstanding Teaching.

sweatshirts"I have always regarded it as a special privilege to share a classroom with the students of the Boston Latin School. They are the best and the brightest and I consider myself very lucky to be among them."

Join us in giving thanks to the teachers who helped you through your time at BLS. Make your gift to support the teachers and students at BLS today. Learn more about Dr. Carroll and other members of the BLSA community at our website.

National Spotlight: Success Despite the Odds
The Huynh Brothers - An Inspiring Story of Determination

We are very proud of all our students and graduates. We find ourselves inspired by so many of their stories. The Huynh brothers are just one example of how some hardships can be countered with hard work. Johnny '13 and George '14 were recently featured on NBC Nightly News to share their continuing story of sheer determination and success when so many odds are stacked against them. Thanks to Billy Baker '93 for telling this inspiring story first in the Boston Globe and for serving as a mentor to them both.

Student Athletes Sign National Letters of Intent

It was an exciting day for Wolfpack athletes who got to sit down side by side as they signed their national letters of intent at BLS last fall. Congratulations to Meagan Lew: crew/Duke University; Lucy Moyes: crew/University of Rhode Island; Maggie Mulligan: basketball/UMass Amherst; Paige Mulry: softball/Providence College; and Patrick Naughton: baseball/Virginia Tech. Mulligan was also named to the Boston Herald's Division 1 Dream Team, cited as "one of the premier inside players in the DCL."

Is Your Class a Contender?

The Contompasis Cup, named for Head Master Emeritus Michael Contompasis ’57, honors the collective spirit of giving back. The Contompasis Cup celebrates class participation and is awarded annually to two classes, those up to the 25th reunion and those beyond. Classes are not eligible during their reunion year. This year's winners will be announced at the Annual Awards Dinner in November. Check out the competition via our website. Get your class in the running for 2014 and make your gift today!

  Special Invitation

See Latin Students in Classical Action

The Classics Department and BLS Junior Classical League would like to extend an invitation to alumni to attend their annual Academic Certamen Team Competition that will take place Saturday, February 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students from around the State and beyond will be competing in this Quiz Bowl type competition over Latin language, Classical Mythology, Roman Culture and Roman History. BLS Classics Masters and Advanced Latin students create the content for this BLS-run event. This is an exciting and impressive day not to be missed!

Innovative STEM Curriculum Earns Grant

BLS was awarded a $100,000 life sciences grant from the state and the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center to continue its implementation of innovative STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) curriculum.

Points of Pride

Thank you to everyone who responded to our October question:
Who was the BLS alumnus whose credits include author and highly respected professor of history at Georgetown University as well as consultant to the U.S. Defense Department and the House Select Committee on Astronautics and Space Exploration? The correct answer is: Carroll Quigley '29. And the winner is: Ari Klickstein '08.

Visit the Points of Pride Contest webpage to see the answers to past questions as well as all of our proud winners.

January question:
BLS class of 1987 holds a special place in the history of Latin School. The class' diplomas are the only ones signed by this highly regarded son of Latin School, a beloved master and respected administrator. Name this distinguished graduate (extra credit given if you know his class year.)

Participants should send responses — including name and class year — magna cum celeritate via e-mail. We’ll be happy to reward the first correct responder with a small BLS item! Note: Alumni may win only once during an academic year.
