  Who is BLS ...?

Meet Harry Xue '14: senior, peer tutor and accomplished musician

student"Sumus primi means being a part of over 375 years of history, leadership and excellence. It also serves as a reminder that in order to maintain that distinguished record and continue to excel, BLS has to adapt to meet the changing demands and challenges of the 21st century. BLS offers a world of resources and opportunities which are not available at any other public school. ... The types of opportunities available here are typically only found at private schools, yet BLS manages to continue to offer them. Obviously, none of this is possible without the continued generosity of alumni, parents and friends, and for that I am extremely grateful.

Make your gift to support the teachers and students at BLS today. Learn more about Harry and other members of the BLSA community at our website.

BLS Founder's Day: April 23 (1635 to 2014)

Today we reflect on the 379th anniversary of the founding of Boston Latin School. We offer gratitude to our founders: "To say, 'well done' to any bit of good work is to take hold of the powers which have made the effort and strengthen them beyond our knowledge." - Phillips Brooks, class of 1851. We celebrate dedicated masters and administrators; talented and hard-working students; supportive families, alumni, and philanthropists whose gifts - both large and small - safeguard the BLS legacy. May alma mater continue to serve as a beacon of hope and opportunity in Boston for generations to come!

Another Gold for BLS

Boston Latin earned another gold medal in U.S. News & World Report's 2014 Top High Schools in America ranking. BLS was ranked #56 nationally/#1 in Massachusetts. Latin School is one of the top 500 schools which earned the gold, out of nearly 20,000 public schools nationally. In all, nine BPS schools earned gold, silver or bronze medals. Congratulations to the BLS faculty, staff, students and all who support our amazing school!

  Unprecedented Sweep

Junior Classical League Tops in State

Pitts '73, P'05, '12 Honored by The Community Music Center of Boston

In March, the CMCB celebrated its 15-year partnership with BLS honoring Arts Program Director Paul Pitts '73, P'05, '12 for his contributions and leadership. The night also launched "The Paul J. Pitts Scholarship Fund" effort to support private music instruction at CMCB for BLS students. It was a wonderful evening of music featuring CMCB and BLS ensembles followed by a dessert reception. Many of Pitts' students and their families - past and present - attended to celebrate the difference he has made for so many young musicians.

Consider A Charitable Gift Annuity

There are many ways to support Boston Latin School. A Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) has the double benefit of providing you with income while also helping the school. CGAs are available in any amount starting at $10,000. The table here illustrates how a $25,000 gift provides you life income and tax benefits today while helping nearly 2,400 students and their faculty at Boston Latin School.

Age     Rate of Return    Yearly Income    Deduction
68        4.9%                   $1,225                $9,710
73        5.5%                   $1,375                $10,945

Points of Pride

Thank you to everyone who responded to our January question:
The class of 1987 diplomas are the only ones signed by this highly regarded son of Latin School, a beloved master and respected administrator. Who is this distinguished graduate? The correct answer is: Joseph Desmond '44. And the winner is: Duncan O'Brien '78.

Visit the Points of Pride Contest webpage to see the answers to past questions as well as all of our proud winners.

April question:
Which BLS alum was director of the famed Boston Marathon for nearly four decades and helped grow it from a race with a couple hundred racers into one of the premier marathons in the world?

Participants should send responses — including name and class year — magna cum celeritate via e-mail. We’ll be happy to reward the first correct responder with a small BLS item! Note: Alumni may win only once during an academic year.
